What's the Difference Between
Claude and Claude Cowork?

Claude and Claude Cowork sound like the same product with a different name. They're not. Here's the plain-language version — what each one actually does, and which to reach for.

The short answer

Claude is the conversational AI you chat with — you ask a question, it answers, and you take that answer and use it yourself. Claude Cowork is an agentic mode of the same AI — you give it a goal, and it works through the actual task itself, using tools and files, checking in with you at the points that matter. Same brain, two very different jobs.

Claude, Cowork, and Cowork mobile — side by side
Claude (Chat) Claude Cowork (Desktop) Claude Cowork (Mobile)
What it's for Thinking things through, writing drafts, brainstorming, getting a second opinion. Actually doing the task — working across your files, apps, and tools while you get on with something else. Delegating a task and checking on it — beta, and more limited than desktop.
What it actually does Answers inside the conversation. You copy, paste, and apply it. Reads and edits real files, produces finished outputs like spreadsheets and documents, and checks in with you at decision points. Task delegation and progress monitoring from your phone. Deep, file-heavy work still happens on desktop.
Best for A question, a draft, a decision you want to think through out loud. A task with several steps that would otherwise sit on your to-do list. Starting or checking on a Cowork task away from your desk.
A real example "Help me think through whether to raise my prices this year." "Go through my last 20 invoices, flag anything overdue, and draft follow-up emails for each." Checking progress on that same invoicing task, or approving its next step, between client meetings.
What "Desktop" means: the Claude Desktop app — a separate application you install on your computer, not just claude.ai open in a browser tab. That's where Cowork reads and writes your files directly, which is why it's the surface for deep, file-heavy work.
Worth knowing: Cowork requires a paid Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise) — it's not on the free plan. Cowork on mobile specifically is a newer beta rollout, starting with Max and expanding to other plans over time.
Which one do I use?

Reach for Claude chat when…

  • You're thinking something through, not ready to hand it off yet
  • You want a draft, a second opinion, or a sounding board
  • The task is quick and you'll do the actual work yourself

Reach for Claude Cowork when…

  • There's a multi-step task you'd otherwise put off
  • It involves real files, tools, or several small actions strung together
  • You'd rather check progress than do the work step by step
Where mobile fits: it's not a separate decision — it's Cowork, reachable for delegating and checking progress when you're not at your desk. The deep, file-heavy work still happens on desktop.

The honest bit

Cowork does more,
so it needs more care

Handing a task to Cowork is a different kind of trust than asking a question in chat. A few things worth knowing before you lean on it.

It can take real actions. Reading files, sending things, using connected tools — that's the whole point. It also means permissions and review matter more than they do in a chat.

Start with something low-stakes. Let it show you how it works before you hand over anything client-facing or financial.

You still sign off. Cowork can do the work, but the judgment call on whether it's ready to go out the door is still yours.

One habit worth building

For anything Cowork touches that a client or IRD will see, review it before it goes anywhere — the same way you would if a new team member had done it.

The bottom line

Claude and Claude Cowork aren't competing products — they're two different ways of working with the same AI, and most people end up using both depending on the moment.
